The 702 Exhibition at Miller off Main St. Galleries ended on Friday of this week.

I picked up my unsold work and a check for one of the pieces I submitted to the exhibition.

My classmates also sold several pieces. It was a great show and I am very grateful to the gallery owner and his daughter for all of their hard work.

It was an amazing show!!!

Almost Time to Open the Exhibit

Derek Reynolds came up with a great design.
It is almost time for the MFA Thesis Exhibit to open at the Covington Center at Radford University.

Derek and I have been working overtime to get everything ready for the exhibit. I will have 17 pieces on display and he will have about the same.

I just need to finish writing my thesis and complete my oral defense and I will be done!

Filling up the big room.

Covington Center Art Gallery
My MFA Show in the Covington Center Art Gallery is on April 5th. Since there are only two of us in the exhibit I have a lot of work to do to fill a huge gallery.

The photo gives a sense of the scale of the two walls I need to fill. The prints on the wall are 24 x 36 inches. It is a big space!

On the plus side it will be a great show and a wonderful chance to show off my photography.

Photographs are all we have sometimes

I was back up to Pocahontas, Virginia yesterday and sadly learned that several of the old buildings I have photographed are now gone.

This image of the shell of the company store is all I have to remember the building because where it stood is an almost vacant lot. It just reminded me of how important photographs can be in recording the history of a place.

Three is a magic number!!!

January has been a great time for me as a fine art photographer. My work is on display at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art New Waves 2013 exhibit, at the Kiernan Gallery Methods (Alternative) exhibit, and the Nelson Gallery included me in the MFA/MA Juried show.

Just a few more months and I should finish my MFA at Radford University.

There are a lot of pictures of happy cats!

According the the website PetaPixel Facebook has over 240 billion photos on its servers — that’s billion… with a “b” — and every day about 350 million more are added. Although some of those might be gems I am sure a lot of the images are photos of the family cat/dog or my lunch today.

It just goes to show how digital photography is changing the amount of information we collect.
The only down side is that a lot of those images are not worth the storage space they take up.

Data! Data! Data!

When it comes to the amount of information our digital society creates the amount is staggering. Consider this quote from the Motley Fool.

"The last two years alone have created 90% of the world's data. Let that sink in for a moment. Every day, a mind-blowing 2.3 million terabytes of data is created and stored. This information age has created high demand for storage components, networking equipment, high-precision sensors, and new-age analytics."

A lot of that "data" is of course in the form of images. Given the popularity of Instagram, Flicker and other photo-sharing sites future historians should have a mountain of data to reconstruct the year 2013.

New Year = New Drive

With the start of 2013 I'm in the process of updating my backups onto another drive before adding a new drive to my Mac. I found a Toshiba 1TH USB 3.0 drive at Staples on Black Friday for $70.00. I plan on using Time Machine to backup the Mac on a daily basis while I continue to us the G-Tech drive as my photo backup.
